Chiefs release Stanford Routt

According to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star, the Chiefs have waived cornerback Stanford Routt to create a roster spot for defensive tackle Shaun Smith.
The Raiders decided not to pay big money to keep Routt in free agency this spring, and the chiefs quickly grabbed up the speedy defensive back.  They hoped he would fill the void left by Chris Carr, and that just hasn't happen this year.  At least not to the tune of $19.6 million dollars, which they agreed to pay him.
So he is now placed on waivers, so they can cut their losses.  Despite the fact that Routt was overpaid by the Chiefs, I think that he will be snatched up quickly once he clears waivers.  Take for instance, a team like the Detroit Lions.  The Lions can barely keep their defensive backs healthy, and have had a different starting combination on the back end in each of their 8 games this season.  It would not surprise me at all to see Mayhew and company take a flier on this guy if he escapes the waiver wire.

Note: I made a correction to state after he clears waivers, because if you grab them off waivers directly, you assume the contract, which most teams would not want to do with Routt.
